2026 Cottbus World Cup Recap

Here’s the review of the scores achieved at the 2026 Cottbus World Cup, that marks the start of a Series comprising 5 competitions. Gymnasts compete exclusively in individual apparatus finals, and have the opportunity to earn prize money as well as qualifications for the 2026 World Championships to be held in Rotterdam.

Competition Overview

The Cottbus World Cup is traditionally regarded as the start of the competitive season for elite gymnasts participating on an international stage. It serves as the inaugural event in a series of 5 World Cups*, that will end in April: gymnasts will then be evaluated and ranked according to their performance on each apparatus. In addition to receiving money, the gymnasts also earn individual qualifications for the 2026 World Championships to be held in Rotterdam next October.

*UPDATE: World Gymnastics has made the decision to cancel the Doha World Cup in light of the current events unfolding in the Middle East.

The 2026 The Cottbus World Cup welcomed gymnasts from all over the world.

Interestingly, there were only two deductions on the Parallel Bars throughout the competition; however, these deductions resulted in a total penalty of ten points, nearly two-thirds of the overall points deducted. Such penalties typically occur when a routine is considered too brief and incomplete, thereby lacking several required elements.

2026 World Cup Series MAG Rankings

It is now the third Olympic Cycle in which World Gymnastics (ex-FIG) has opted to utilize the annual World Cup Series as a criterion for the selection of gymnasts for both the World Championships and the Olympic Games.

48 male gymnasts (8 for each apparatus) can qualify for the 2026 World Championships in Rotterdam next October: after each of the 6 World Cups that will take place between February and April, gymnasts will be allocated points according to their rankings in the event finals and qualifications (see detailed explanation here).

After the 2026 Doha World Cup, the top 8 male gymnasts with the most points from four meets on each apparatus can earn a spot for the 2026 World Championships if:
– their country hasn’t qualified a team at the 2026 continental championships
– if they haven’t qualified individually via the AA at 2026 continental championships

Points awarded to ineligible gymnasts shall be redistributed to those athletes who meet eligibility criteria. Gymnasts competing in the Qualification round who achieve a ranking of 16th place or lower shall be allocated 1 point.

After Cottbus, rankings were as follows for each apparatus. The table will be updated after each of the remaining 5 World Cups, and upon the completion of all five continental championships:
– African Championships: 21-27 April
– Oceania Championships: 8-9 May
– Pan American Championships: 15-21 June
– Asian Championships: 18-21 June
– European Championships: 13-16 August
