Methodology

Athletes competing in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics have shaped the sport to make it as it is today. These rankings encompass all Olympic Games (19 competitions) and World Championships (41 competitions) since 1948. The format of the meets before World War II differed significantly, incorporating apparatuses that are no longer in use, such as rope climbing, tumbling, and Indian clubs. In total, 595 male gymnasts have won at least 1 medal, either at the Olympic Games, the World Championships, or both, since 1948.

In order to properly assess the significance of each medal, a bonus system has been instituted. A bronze medal is not equivalent to a gold medal, and the Olympic Games are revered as a paramount event for any gymnast, embodying prestige, tradition, global significance, frequency, and competition.

The ultimate outcomes are unquestionably influenced by factors not directly associated with men’s artistic gymnastics. The boycott of the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games, along with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, significantly contributed to the potential number of medals that gymnasts could have achieved.

By default:
1/ Gold medal = 3 points
2/ Silver medal = 2 points
3/ Bronze medal = 1 point

Bonus:
1/ Olympic medal: +2 points
2/ All Around medal: +2 points
3/ Individual apparatus medal: +1 point

So a silver medal won on Pommel Horse at Worlds is worth 2+1=3
A gold medal in the All Around at the Olympics is worth 3+2+2=7

Here are some factors to consider when interpreting these rankings and understanding why numerous gymnasts from the 1960s to the 1990s achieved top rankings in the three lists:
– between 1948 and the mid-1990s, the large majority of medals were won by gymnasts from 3 or 4 countries (usually the Soviet Union, Japan and later, China)
– in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics the rule limiting each country to two athletes per event did not exist, allowing three gymnasts from the same country to compete in both the All Around and Events finals.
– until 1978, World Championships took place every 4 years
– the scoring system and the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Code of Points were not as refined as they are in the present day.
– since the 2000s, achieving 6 or 8 medals at a single championship has become notably challenging for gymnasts. Even Kohei Uchimura, widely regarded as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, secured fewer medals compared to his predecessors despite winning the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics All-Around competition 8 times between 2009 and 2016. This trend can be attributed to the dominance of specialists in the apparatus finals, who concentrate solely on 1 or 2 apparatuses, intensifying the competition significantly.
I also calculated the rankings by using the rule “1 medal” = “1 point” and the rankings slightly differ but the names of the gymnasts are the same (just in a different order).

Men’s Artistic Gymnastics has undergone significant evolution since 1948. In certain Olympic cycles, teams could comprise up to 8 gymnasts. It was not uncommon to witness a single athlete clinching 3, 4, or even 5 medals at the same competition; however, such occurrences have become rarer in recent meets.

The transformation in the scoring system has wielded a substantial influence on the makeup of teams and the approach taken by gymnasts, who increasingly opt to specialize in just one or two apparatuses. Noteworthy athletes such as Vitaly Scherbo and Nikolai Andrianov, who participated in 2 or 3 Olympic Games, secured gold or silver medals in at least 6 out of 8 competitions held at each event.

Subsequently, since the mid-2000s, the feat of gymnasts winning more than 3 medals at a single meet has become increasingly uncommon.
As a result, gymnasts who competed from the 1950s to the early 1990s are over-represented compared to current gymnasts, despite the higher number of competitions in recent years.
