Mental & Men’s Gymnastics: Ranking of Male Gymnasts after the Baku World Cup
GENERAL INFORMATION
In order to qualify to the Paris Olympic Games, gymnasts can use the 2024 Apparatus World Cup Series, which includes 4 competitions: Cairo, Cottbus, Baku and Doha.
The qualification places will be granted to the two highest eligible gymnasts per apparatus, with a maximum of 1 quota place per country. It’s a nominative spot.
Only eligible gymnasts:
– gymnasts with no teams already qualified to Paris at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships; this excludes China, Japan, Great Britain, USA, Canada, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Turkey, Netherlands and Ukraine.
– gymnasts not already qualified via the All Around qualifications or the Apparatus finals at the 2023 Men’s Gymnastics World Championships
– gymnasts from countries, which have not already qualified a maximum of 3 individual gymnasts at the 2023 World Championships
The names of the 8 athletes will be known after the 4th World Cup, which will take place in Doha on 17-20 April 2024. These gymnasts may participate on all apparatus at the Olympic Games.
At the end of each competition, Apparatus World Cup points are assigned on each apparatus to the competitors by name:
Rank 1 = 30 points
Rank 2 = 25 points
Rank 3 = 20 points
Rank 4 = 18 points
Rank 5 = 16 points
Rank 6 = 14 points
Rank 7 = 12 points
Rank 8 = 10 points
Rank 9 = 8 points
Rank 10 = 7 points
Rank 11 = 6 points
Rank 12 = 5 points
Rank 13 = 4 points
Rank 14 = 3 points
Rank 15 = 2 points
Rank 16 = 1 point
– Points are allocated after the event final only to eligible gymnasts, depending on their rank in the final and in qualifications.
– Points are allocated only to eligible gymnasts, who reach the Top 16 in qualifications (the top 16 takes into account non-eligible gymnasts).
– The final points will be the sum of the three highest scores reached by each gymnast out of the 4 World Cups.
– Belgium has already reached the maximum quota at the 2023 World Championships.
– Brazil and South Korea can qualify only 1 gymnast.
– Armenia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Kazakhstan, the Philippines and Romania can qualify only 2 gymnasts.

Considering all these rules and criteria in Men’s Gymnastics, it’s complicated to really understand how points are allocated and how gymnasts are ranked after the latest World Cup that took place in Baku last week-end. In order to understand how gymnasts stand before the last step of the process, here’s a recap of the situation per apparatus.
The status “stand-by” in the last columns indicates that the gymnast is mathematically eliminated after 3 World Cups and cannot outrank the current top 2 gymnasts, regardless of their rank in Doha, because the final result is based on the the sum of the three highest scores . Yet if one or two of the top 2 gymnasts had to withdraw, their spots would be reallocated to the next-eligible competitor.
FLOOR EXERCISE
With already 80 points, Ryu Sung-hyun of South Korea is already qualified for Paris. Even if Yahor Sharamkou obtains 30 points in Doha, he will only equal Ryu’s current score. As a consequence, Kim Hansol is theoretically eliminated due to the “one gymnast per country” rule, but if for some reason Ryu Sunghyun couldn’t take part in the Games, the rule would not be applied. So Kim Hansol can compete in Doha and obtain a sufficient number of points to allow him to be in the top 2 gymnasts on Floor Exercise.
The gymnasts ranked 10+ are today mathematically eliminated, but they can, in theory, be considered as reserves if they obtain enough points in Doha and if the gymnasts ranked below could eventually not compete in the men’s gymnastics competitions in Paris.
POMMEL HORSE
After Baku, only 4 gymnasts are mathematically still in the running towards being in the top 2 on Pommel Horse. If Benjamin Osberger of France obtains 30 points in Doha, his lowest score (14) will be removed and his final total will be 18+14+30=62 points, which would place him behind Ahmad Abu Al Soud (Jordan) and Nariman Kurbanov (Kazakhstan) in the final rankings. However, if for some reason, one of two of the top 2 gymnasts withdrew, the spot to Paris would be reallocated to the next gymnast (=Benjamin in this situation).
STILL RINGS
The competition is very tight on rings: just like on Pommel Horse, there are several event specialists who chose the 2024 Apparatus World Cup Series to get a spot to the Paris Games. Amir Aït Saïd of France is currently leading with 73 points, followed closely by Nikita Simonov of Azerbaijan. Regarding Vinzenz Höck of Austria, his case is similar to Benjamin Osberger’s on Pommel Horse: Vinzenz is “mathematically” eliminated; if he obtains 30 points in Doha, his final score will be 12+14+30=56, which places him behind the current two leaders. However, the possibility to be a reserve is still possible.
VAULT
Unfortunately Jacob Karlsen of Norway got injured and had an operation after the event final in Baku. He won’t be able to compete in Doha. Mahdi Olfati of Iran and Shek Wai Hung of Hong Kong are neck and neck in the competition with respectively 62 and 60 points, and James Bacuetti (Australia) is not far behind.
PARALLEL BARS
Five gymnasts are still in the race, including two from Colombia, but there is only one spot for the country. The scores are close and each of the 5 gymnasts has already collected at least one pack of 25 points in the first three Men’s Gymnastics World Cups.
HIGH BAR
Tang Chia-hung of Taiwan has already secured his place to the Men’s Gymnastics competitions at the 2024 Olympics: only Robert Tvorogal (Lithuania), who is well placed in the current list, can outrank him in Doha. For Angel Barajas (Colombia) and Arthur Nory Mariano (Brazil) to win a spot, they need to obtain 30 points in Doha to tie with Robert (who would also need to get less than 20 points).
