2025-2028 MAG Code of Points Floor Exercise
How the 2025-2028 MAG Code of Points impacts Floor Exercise routines
The 2025-2028 MAG Code of Points has been used since the beginning of the year. Here are the main changes in the evaluation of MAG’s Floor Exercise routines and what’s been happening on the podiums since January.
This article includes the updates released by the FIG in August and October 2025 (updates about Floor’s one-leg balance element and how to reach the corner)
2025-2028 MAG Code of Points Floor Exercise:
General Information
1. NUMBER OF ELEMENTS – 2025-2028 MAG Code of Points Floor
8 elements
The difficulty value of a routine is the combined total of the 8 elements with the highest value. On Floor Exercise, gymnasts must perform elements of each of the 4 Element Groups with a maximum of 4 skills from the same EG.
2. ELEMENT GROUPS VALUES (EG)
The value by default was 0.5 for each of the four Element Groups in the 2021-2024 COP. In the 2025-2028 COP, the value will be calculated as follows:
EG I:
0.5
EG II, EG III and EG IV:
If the highest-rated elements performed are between A and C, 0.3 will be awarded. if the highest-rated elements performed are D+, 0.5 will be awarded.
NUMBER OF SKILLS BY EG:
Maximum 4 elements from the same EG (as opposed to 5 in the 2022-2025 MAG COP)
3. ELEMENT GROUPS NAMES – 2025-2028 MAG Code of Points Floor
EG I:
Non-acrobatic elements
EG II:
Acrobatic elements forward
EG III:
Acrobatic elements backward
EG IV:
Single salto forward and/or backward with 1 or more turns
(Note: it means that some elements, which used to be in EG II and III are moved to this group in the 2025-2025 MAG COP, like, for example, the layout triple twist front (Shirai II) and backward or the layout quadruple twist backward (Shirai/Nguyen)
4. DURATION – 2025-2028 MAG Code of Points Floor
Maximum 70 seconds
5. COMPOSITION – 2025-2028 MAG Code of Points Floor
- The same diagonal may not be used more than 2 times in a row (0.3 neutral deduction if not performed)
- Tinisca (Round-off with 1/4 turn to land facing forward) not allowed. Otherwise the next element will not be recognized.
- Only 1 strength skill allowed
- Only 1 circle, flair or Russian element allowed
- The highest elements in the entire 2025-2028 MAG COP are the Nagornyy and the Jarman, both rated J (=1 point).
- Gymnasts must show a balance element on one leg; it may be performed outside of the counting 8 elements. The elements 61 (rated A) and 62 (rated B) can be performed for this requirement (0.3 neutral deduction if not performed)
UPDATE – AUGUST 2025
After six months of practice, the FIG’s Technical Committee issued an update concerning the Balance Element On One Leg, highlighting it as “one area that has received consistently negative feedback”, as stated in the newsletter.
The introduction of this rule was to integrate acrobatic elements with various gymnastic components, including strength, balance, flexibility, and choreographic combinations.
“Allowing a gymnast to choose skills that lend themselves to his favored ability, whilst at the same time encouraging choreographic combinations that show harmonious rhythm between tumble passes, will ultimately improve the overall balance and appeal of the floor exercise.“
Therefore, the gymnast must show either:
– a one leg balance
or
– a jump/leap with or without turn from the list of specific elements.
The balance or jump/leap may be outside the counting 8 elements. A 0.3 neutral deduction will be taken by the D Jury if this requirement is not fulfilled.
Allowable elements:
a. EGI.67 Jump backward to front support (A)
b. EGI.68 “Endo” – Jump backward with pike-stretch or with 1/1 turn to front support (B)
c. EGI.74 “Tong Fei” – Butterfly with 1/1 twist forward or backward (B)
d. EGI.75 Butterfly with 2/1 twist (C)
e. EGI.15 Jump forward with 1/1 turn to front support (A)
f. EGI.16 Jump backward with 3/2 twist to front support (B)
g. EGI.17 Jump forward with 2/1 twist to front support (C)
h. EGI.43 Jump forward with ½ turn to momentary handstand (A)
i. EGII.8 Dive roll with 1/1 twist (B)
j. EGI.73 Stag Leap with 1/1 turn (A)
6. LAST TUMBLING PASS
A multiple salto element is required for the dismount for Seniors (0.3 neutral deduction if not performed). Adios triple twist…
0.1 bonus granted for stuck landing 🛬(skills D+)

2025-2028 MAG Code of Points Floor Exercise:
Upgraded and Downgraded Elements on Floor
1. UPGRADED ELEMENTS
- Support scale: B => C
- Support scale to handstand: C => D
- Double salto forward tucked with 1/1 twist: E => F (this makes it equal to the Zapata I, which includes an additional 1/2 twist… this is weird)
- Double pike backward: C => D
- Arabian double pike: D => E
- The “Hypolito” – Arabian double layout with 1/1 twist: F => G
- Double layout backward: D => E
- Double layout backward with 1/1 twist: E => F
- The “Penev” – Double layout backward with two 1/2 twists: E => F
- Double layout backward with 2/1 twists: F => G
- Double layout backward layout with 5/2 t.: G => H
- The “Shirai III” – Double layout backward with 3/1 twists: H => I

2025-2028 MAG Code of Points Floor Exercise:
Reaching the corner
The FIG Technical Committee meticulously evaluated the crucial subject of “corner transitions,” expressing concern over the issues of inadequate execution and the detrimental repetition associated with these movements. In response to these concerns, the Committee imposes the following changes with immediate effect:
– Choreographic leaps and turn combinations should be used, specifically in the corners, to create harmonious rhythm between tumbling passes.
– Simple steps, with or without 180° turn, will attract a small deduction for lack of artistry.
– All choreographic leaps, jumps and turns must show amplitude and appropriate extension or will be deducted with a small error.
– In 2026, all corner transitions must be different or will attract a 0.3 neutral deduction taken by the D jury.

Impact on Current Floor Routines in MAG
NEW DIRECTIONS
The 2025-2028 MAG Code of Points started being used in some competitions at the end of 2024 and has been officially implemented in all meets in January. The ramifications of the new regulations are beginning to manifest in the routines executed during national competitions, and it will be noteworthy to observe their effects at the inaugural World Cups in Cottbus (February 20-23), Baku (March 6-9), Doha (April 16-19), and Cairo (April 25-28).
The routines consist of 8 elements instead of 10, which mathematically results in a reduced score; furthermore, the value of EG II and EG III can be either 0.3 or 0.5, contingent upon the highest-rated element executed from each of these two groups, thus potentially influencing the final score. Additionally, it is feasible to enhance the value of EG IV by executing an element rated F+. Also the upgrade of 14 skills on Floor helped maintain a certain form of balance.
IMPACT OF THE UPGRADES: These upgrades definitely pushed for more difficulty: Kameron Nelson is the first gymnast to include 2 triple back saltos in a single routine: a Nagornyy (J) in the opening pass and a Liukin (I) in the second pass: that adds 1.9 point to the difficulty
DOUBLE BACK LAYOUTS: The backward double layouts and their derivatives, featuring 1/2 and complete twists, have undergone an upgrade of 0.1. A growing number of gymnasts have begun to incorporate an increased variety of elements from this skills family, including the double layout backward with 1/1 twist, the “Penev,” along with the double layout backward with 2/1 twists and the double layout backward layout with 5/2 twists. This will make G and H elements more common this quad. It remains to be determined whether the “Shirai III” (double layout backward with 3/1 twists) and the “Jarman” (double layout backward with 3.5 twists), rated I and J respectively, will become less uncommon over the forthcoming four-year period.
ONE-LEG BALANCE ELEMENT: In the routines performed at the NCAA in the USA and in the Top 12 in France, there have been some trouble about the one leg balance skills: some gymnasts may not have the time to rehearse accordingly and this element has not been a major part of the training sessions for a few decades.
LAST TUMBLING PASS: It was common for gymnasts to conclude their routines with a triple twist, which permitted them to incorporate a D rated element to achieve 0.5 for the 4th EG value. The 2025-2028 MAG COP now requires of gymnasts to end their floor exercise with a multiple salto. Given that the piked double back has been elevated to a D rating, this element has gained prominence since the beginning of 2025. In elite men’s gymnastics, the piked double back had not been consistently performed since the late 1990s, whereas it has remained a prevalent element in WAG.
