Still Rings at the Olympics in Paris

Which gymnasts are expected to participate in the Still Rings final at the Paris Olympics? A showdown is anticipated between “Lord of the Rings” Liu Yang and Eleftherios Petrounias, both renowned Olympic and World Champions accustomed to winning competitions and attaining recognition for their achievements.

Liu Yang and Eleftherios Petrounias are among the main favorites to reach the podium on the 4th of August. 5 out of the 8 gymnasts who competed in the final in Tokyo are back and 4 out of the 8 athletes who reach the Stil Rings final at the latest World Championships will also compete in Paris.

Among the competitors slated to participate in the 2024 Olympics, Liu Yang has achieved the highest score on the Still Rings event in 2024, earning a score of 15.400 in the event final at the Chinese Nationals. Additionally, Zou Jingyuan delivered an impressive performance during this competition, securing a score of 15.233. Following closely is Eleftherios, who attained a score of 15.000 at the European Championships.

A contingent of approximately a dozen skilled gymnasts is poised to offer strong competition and vie for a podium placement. Notably among them are Adem Asil, the 2022 World Champion, and Samir Aït Saïd, the sole representative for the host country France after qualifying via the 2024 World Cup Series. Samir garnered international attention when he sustained a double compound fracture in his left leg during a faulty landing on the vault at the 2016 Olympics. Although he had qualified for the Rings final, he regrettably had to withdraw.

His determination and tenacity to return to the elite level for the following Olympics in Tokyo ultimately paid off as he once again qualified for the Rings final, finishing in 4th place. The list of Still Rings specialists who qualified for the Paris Olympics is not extensive, raising the likelihood that the final might be disrupted by challengers.
