Men’s Gymnastics Scores Review – 2022-2024
Apparatus Finals Gymnastics Scores
Men’s Gymnastics Scores Review: average difficulty and execution scores at the World Championships in 2022 and 2023, as well as at the 2024 Olympic Games, for each of the six apparatus finals. The 2021 World Championships are part of this Olympic cycle but the scores were not taken into account because the 2017-2021 Code of Points was still being used.

It’s interesting to observe the evolution of the average and highest difficulty and execution rates during this Olympic cycle. The progression of the difficulty statistics is typically associated with the presence of gymnasts recognized for incorporating the most challenging elements and connections into their routines. Meanwhile, the trends in execution reveal that this aspect of the total score often serves as a critical factor in distinguishing medal contenders. It is considerably more typical to observe gymnasts with the highest execution scores on the podium (except unfortunately for Benjamin Osberger, Vahagn Davtyan, and Paul Juda); conversely, top D scorers do not consistently secure a medal.
Floor Exercise

DIFFICULTY:
The highest and average difficulty scores have shown a consistent increase since 2022: Kazuki Minami (JPN) achieved a difficulty score of 6.5 in 2023, while Carlos Yulo (PHI) recorded a score of 6.6 at the Olympic Games.
EXECUTION:
Benjamin Osberger (FRA) attained the highest execution score of the quad during the floor finals, with a score of 8.630 in Liverpool (he was first reserve and competed when Zhang Boheng withdrew). The average execution score reached an impressive 8.300 at the Olympics, a noteworthy achievement for the floor exercise.
Pommel Horse

DIFFICULTY:
Max Whitlock, OBE (GBR), recorded an impressive difficulty score of 6.9 in both 2023 and 2024; however, he unfortunately fell during both finals.
EXECUTION:
Rhys McClenaghan (IRL), a two-time World Champion and Olympic Champion on the Pommel Horse, achieved the highest execution score in each of the three finals and secured victory in all. The analysis of the men’s gymnastics scores indicates that the amalgamation of his difficulty and execution scores ensured a total score surpassing 15 across the three competitions.
Still Rings

DIFFICULTY:
The rings event was predominantly influenced by competitors from China, with two out of these three gymnasts – You Hao, Zou Jingyuan, and Liu Yang – participating in each of the three finals, collectively securing a total of five medals.
EXECUTION:
The execution scores exhibited a consistent upward trend each year, with the highest score recorded at 8.9 during the Paris Olympics, achieved by Liu Yang (CHN) and Samir Aït Saïd (FRA).
Vault

DIFFICULTY:
The highest rated vault in the COP is 6.0 and it was performed by several gymnasts at each of the 3 finals.
EXECUTION:
Artur Davtyan is known for his excellent execution and scored 9.530 at the 2023 World Championships.
Parallel Bars

DIFFICULTY:
Illia Kovtun (UKR) proposed an exercise that achieved the highest difficulty score (7.0) at the Olympics, ultimately securing a silver medal.
EXECUTION:
The men’s gymnastics scores reflect the competitions in which Zou Jingyuan (CHN) participated. He did not compete at the 2023 World Championships, but recorded scores exceeding 9.0 in 2022 (9.266) and 2024 (9.3), winning gold medals in both years.
Horizontal Bar

DIFFICULTY:
Hashimoto Daiki (JPN) achieved the highest D score at the 2023 Antwerp Worlds, with a score of 6.7, followed by Angel Barajas (COL), who scored 6.6 at the Olympics.
EXECUTION:
During the final at the Olympics, five gymnasts fell, including the two bronze medalists Tang Chia-hung (TPE) and Zhang Boheng (CHN), which accounts for the notable decrease in the average execution score in 2024.
The forthcoming Olympic cycle promises to be particularly intriguing, featuring four distinct competitions: three World Championships and one Olympic Games. The modifications introduced in the 2025-2028 Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Code of Points are anticipated to have a significant effect on the scoring outcomes.
