Based on the Difficulty and Execution scores over the last 9 months, and with the absence of Russia, forecasts indicated that the battle for gold would be between Japan and China. The men’s gymnastics team from Japan achieved the gold medal, demonstrating remarkable perseverance, despite Daiki’s fall on pommel horse. The competition reached its climax as China appeared poised to clinch its first Olympic title in 12 years.

However, Japan maintained composure and surged ahead in the final rotation to claim the gold medal. Despite trailing by more than three points entering the last apparatus, the Japanese team successfully surpassed their adversaries, capitalizing on uncharacteristic errors committed by China’s Su Weide, who experienced two falls from the horizontal bar. Ultimately, Japan emerged victorious by a narrow margin of 0.532 points.

The USA, Ukraine, and Great Britain were the primary contenders for the bronze medal; the American team seized the opportunity, securing the bronze medal and achieving their first podium finish since 2008. Pommel Horse’s specialist Stephen Nedoroscik obtained 14.866 on this apparatus, the highest score achieved by the US in this final.

Both Boheng and Hashimoto were prime contenders for the Olympic gold medal in the All-Around event: Daiki had previously held the Olympic and World Champion titles, while Boheng clinched gold at the 2021 Worlds and the 2023 Asian Games. After falling on the Pommel Horse in the second rotation, Hashimoto Daiki finished in 6th place. But Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka secured the gold medal in the men’s all-around final with a score of 86.832, edging out China’s Zhang Boheng by 0.233 points for second place and Xiao Ruoteng of China by 0.468 points for third.

This achievement marked Oka’s inaugural major senior championship win. Despite not attaining the highest score in any of the 6 apparatuses, Oka showcased consistency throughout. This represents Japan’s fourth consecutive gold medal in the All-Around final.

Carlos Yulo has successfully leveraged his talent, achieving a historic feat as the Filipino gymnast secured the gold medal in the men’s floor exercise final in Paris. Carlos attained a score of 15.000, executing a flawless three-and-a-half twist dismount. Reflecting on his achievement, Yulo expressed deep appreciation for the medal and credited his faith. The silver medal was claimed by Artem Dolgopyat of Israel with a score of 14.966, while the bronze was secured by Jake Jarman (GBR) with a score of 14.933.

This victory marks a significant milestone for the Philippines, being the first gymnastics medal and the second Olympic gold in the nation’s history, following Hidilyn Diaz’s victory in the Women’s 55 kg weightlifting event at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The primary focus of attention was on the “competition” between Max Whitlock and Rhys McClenaghan. Max, a two-time Olympic and a three-time World Champion, was pitted against Rhys, the Irish athlete who secured the World title in 2022 and 2023. Although Max’s routine was remarkable, it contained a few minor errors, leading to a fourth-place finish.

This result meant that he narrowly missed the opportunity to create Olympic history by becoming the first gymnast to win four medals on the same apparatus. Whitlock had previously clinched a bronze at the London 2012 Games and gold at both the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Games.

Gold medalist at the 2023 and 2024 Asian Championships, Nariman Kurbanov achieved a score of 15.433, surpassing his qualification score of 15.000 by a significant margin, and won silver.

Out of the 8 finalists, 5 gymnasts increased their difficulty score; the average D score was 6.48 in the qualification phase and 6.63. Rhys increased his D score by 0.3 points and delivered an excellent routine characterized by its difficulty and very good execution. Same approach by Nariman.

As for the “Pommel Horse Guy”, aka. Stephen Nedoroscik (USA), who won bronze, he confirmed his legendary status in this event final, after scoring high in the qualifications and the Teams finals. Social media users compared him to Clark Kent, Superman’s alter-ego who wears glasses. “I don’t even really see when I’m doing my gymnastics. It’s all in the hands. I can feel everything.” said Stephen.

Liu Yang and Eleftherios Petrounias were among the main favorites to reach the podium on the 4th of August. 5 out of the 8 gymnasts who competed in the final in Tokyo are back and 4 out of the 8 athletes who reached the Stil Rings final at the latest World Championships also competed in Paris. Among the slated competitors for the 2024 Olympics, Liu Yang achieved the highest score on the Still Rings event, earning a score of 15.400 in the event final at the Chinese Nationals. Furthermore, Zou Jingyuan delivered an impressive performance during this competition, securing a score of 15.233.

Liu Yang achieved a remarkable feat by securing 2 consecutive Olympic gold medals. The current Olympic and World Champion demonstrated remarkable ease in executing his routine, exhibiting no signs of weakness. Similarly, his compatriot Zou Jingyuan, who had qualified in first position, claimed the silver medal. Eleftherios Petrounias (GRE) added to his extensive Olympic record by clinching the bronze with an improved routine, earning an execution score of 8.800.

Following closely was Samir Aït Saïd, the only representative for the host nation of France, who secured qualification through the 2024 World Cup Series. Despite achieving the highest execution score in the final (8.900), it proved insufficient to clinch a bronze medal. Participating in his third Olympic Games, this time on home turf, the 34-year-old athlete maintained a composed demeanor as his coach Kévin Dupuis endeavored to offer solace.

He expressed, “I am profoundly disheartened and grieved. I am greatly taken aback by my score, but I must choose my words carefully,” thereby implying that the judges had not rendered a fair score. “Following the event, some of my fellow competitors approached me to express their perplexity regarding my score.”

In a subsequent interview, he raised queries about certain decisions made by the Fédération Française de Gymnastique: “I am referring to men’s artistic gymnastics only: we are stuck in an inefficient system. While gymnasts from other nations traveled abroad to train, we remained at home, conducting minimal training sessions out of France, which, in my view, is an error,” he continued. “This was the primary discussion within my team. We will need to seek training opportunities elsewhere,” he affirmed to French radio RMC.

Carlos Yulo secured his second Olympic title within 24 hours of his victory in the Floor Exercise final, attributing his success to a piked Dragulescu valued at 6.0. As the 2021 World Champion on this apparatus, he achieved a remarkable score of 15.433 on his initial vault, the highest in men’s artistic gymnastics at the Olympics.

In a post-event interview, Carlos expressed, “I was just hoping to perform well (today). I didn’t really expect a medal. It really felt like a bonus for me. It’s crazy because last night I couldn’t sleep, I was so hyped because I had won that gold medal on floor.” Artur Davtyan, the 2022 World Champion known for his precision and impeccable landings, earned an identical score on both vaults, securing the silver.

The youngest finalist, 20-year-old Harry Hepworth, had qualified for three event finals at his first World Championships in Antwerp 10 months ago. In Paris, Harry clinched a bronze medal on his Olympic debut, narrowly surpassing the reigning world champion Jake Jarman, who missed the podium by less than two-hundredths of a point.

Zou Jingyuan, the reigning Olympic Champion and 3-time World Champion on the Parallel Bars was the favored contender for the gold medal. He achieved the highest score on all events in these Olympic Games during qualifications and the event final, with a score of 16.200 and an execution score of 9.300. Illia Kovtun, who narrowly missed the All-Around podium by 0.199 points behind Xiao Ruoteng, delivered one of the finest Parallel Bars routines of his career, securing the silver medal.

He said “”I didn’t expect this to happen. I still haven’t realized what I have achieved. I’m very proud of myself and being able to win this medal for my country, Ukraine.” Shinnosuke Oka claimed the third and penultimate medal of these Games with a score of 15.300.

In the absence of the reigning Olympic and World Champion, Hashimoto Daiki, who fell during qualifications, the predictions for the podium were open. However, the final event mirrored the events of Tokyo 2020, with six gymnasts falling, some falling twice and others experiencing missteps during their landings.

It was a disheartening conclusion to these Olympics. Merely maintaining stability on the bar provided athletes with a strong opportunity to contend for a medal. Notably, Shinnosuke Oka (JPN) and Colombia’s Angel Barajas both achieved a score of 14.533, yet the tiebreaker is based on their execution scores: Shinnosuke got 8.633 and Angel scored 7.933, thereby securing the silver medal position — a historic moment as Colombia clinched its first Olympic medal in gymnastics. Tang Chia-Hung (TPE) and Zhang Boheng (CHN) both experienced falls and also obtained identical scores, thereby securing the bronze medals. Tang Chia-hung’s qualified for the Olympics with the 2024 World Cup Series, where he presented an original, well-constructed, and challenging routine.
